Monarch confirms dead toll of accident in Cross River,

The Paramount Ruler of Yakurr local government area of Cross River State, His Royal Majesty (HRM), Obol Lopon Ofem Ubana Eteng has confirmed that only three persons died in a vehicle clash in a market in Ugep, Yakurr local government area of Cross River.

Speaking with DAILY NEWS on Thursday via phone,  Obol Lopon lamented the accident which allegedly happened as a result of brake failure explaining, of the number that died, only one was from Ugep.

Hear him, “We are still on that incident; five persons are hospitalised and three dead. Of the dead, one is from Ugep that is an indigene while we don’t know the others, we don’t know where they are from but we are still investigating with a view to unravelling their identity” he stated..

DAILY NEWS had exclusively reported about the accident which claimed several lives, others injured and are receiving treatments while property worth several millions of naira was destroyed.

“A Toyota Camry ran through shops, leaving three persons dead on the spot while five others were allegedly hospitalised” an eyewitness, Patrick Ofem said maintaining that the vehicle with no registration number was descending a hilly junction during the afternoon period of the day after a break failure and caused the worst havoc the community had ever faced.

“A Toyota vehicle descended from the nearest junction (Ediba junction) into the market which entered into people’s shops and destroyed properties and about 11 victims were recorded. Three of them died instantly, while the others were rushed to the hospital.

“The Ugep people cried like never before, as they lamented to God for letting such calamity befalls them this new year”, Ofem said. Another eyewitness who gave his name as Obasesam Ikpi, said the incident was tragic as the entire Yakurr local government area are mourning the persons that died from the ghastly accident.

According to Ikpi, “A car which was coming from Ediba junction in Ugep, along Ikom/Calabar Highway lost control, entered into people shops and condemned properties in Ugep Tuesday market

“One lady and two guys died at the spot while the other five died in the hospital after eight of them were rushed to the hospital. We could not ascertain the real cause of the vehicle’s diversion as the driver was said to be in coma as at the time of filing this report” the witness said.
