Cultism has penetrated primary schools in Cross River and has gone down to other level of education in the state.
The Paramount Ruler of Calabar South local government area of Cross River State, Nyam Nnankor1, Prof. Itam Hogan Itam, told DAILY NEWS in Calabar on Friday that cultism had also gone down to secondary schools while University was their birth place.
“But the one in Calabar South is particularly pathetic because instead of going down, after a period of time, it’s become worse especially in the past 2 months. A lot of cultism are practice by non indigenes who stayed here.
“Some of the perpetrators of these heinous crimes have committed atrocity in other places and came to Calabar to continue with that same crimes. They don’t stay with their parents.
The Monarch regretted that the recent cult clash which claimed several lives and blamed it on unknown sponsors who provided the suspected cult boys with guns, bullets and matchets.
“It was a reprisal attack. About 2-3 years ago, we did something traditionally about the cultism and it was nowhere to be found in Calabar South and we thought we have won but here we are again.
“The method we applied then was that, we appealed to our gods and the owners of the land, we used traditional means to call them, we went from Streets to Streets, poured wines and invoked their spirits and it worked.
“I think these things have expiring dates too but now that they have alerted us and we have planned stronger things. The first one was effective and this time around we will invite our traditional medicine men to come and do what they know how to do best.
“Similar thing was done in Benin and Oron, it worked and we will do it in Calabar South. We will do something stronger this time around.
He said that cultism was a bane of the society and young bright people with future practice this killing game, cultism depict nothing apart from death, destruction and violence.
“On Tuesday, May 14, there was killing along Fenton, five persons were killed, and it is the same reprisal, they traced the killers of other cult group to the area and murdered them there.
“This time parents are not spared, they are murdered equally, if your son involved in killing others and they came looking for him but not found, they kill the parents or any one they see in the house. It is as bad as that.
“The security forces, traditional rulers, vigilante have to be empowered by government, if this is done, the traditional rulers will fish out the suspected cultist.
”Government should engage religious bodies, get their confidence, engage juju priests and get their confidence, most of these juju priests prepared charms for these cultists.
“Government should give soft loans to graduates and school leavers, government should create jobs for her citizenries, establish industries and companies.
“Any time we have big project in Calabar, the level of crimes are reduce because most of the youths would be engaged” he stated.
